Jabb n Nia

***This takes place prior to the Dark Paralysis***
Lieutenant Jabb Shard rode along side the princess keeping a eye out for danger. Nia was a care free one, not to be troubled by protocol or rules, but that was probably the best thing about her that Jabb had grown to love. Shaking his head Jabb shook the thoughts away, he was the princess's royal bodyguard, not a suitor come a calling and he had to remind himself of his duties. Still it didn’t hurt to think on how happy she made him feel when he was around her, unlike the others Nia treated him as a person, an individual instead of just a regular guard and that went a long ways with him.
Nia rode and sighed. She had gotten used to riding alone and liked it. But ONE attempt on her life and suddenly she was only allowed to be alone in the Lady's Garden. She stole a side glance at Jabb. At least HE was stumbling with constantly trying to stifle her and make her feel like a caged glass bird. She liked the fact he wasn't stuffy around her. Suddenly a wicked smile crossed her features.
Jabb had been checking an out grove of trees when he caught the smile on Nia’s face and he spun his horse around. "Lady Nia, is there something you see or that amuses you?"
"Not yet, Lieutenant." And suddenly without another word she spurred her horse and took off at full pelt. Her echoed laughter all that was lingering around him.
Jabb frowned and spurred his horse into motion, what ever shock he had felt already giving way to his resolve to keep up with the princess. But as they rode on he could she that she had the faster horse and that he would not be able to catch up to her instead Jabb slowed his horse down and whistled, a Spencer cat materialized next to him and purred looking at him. "Follow her Grak, I will catch up as soon as I can, have Maliss alert the other Shards she has gone but tell them to remain at their posts, she has had enough of being caged I think." Grak purred once more and faded from sight following his masters orders as Jabb watched the princess begin to disappear from view, frowning anew he spurred his horse forward hoping that hers would be getting tired while his had had a brief respite.
She glanced over her shoulder and laughed once more seeing she had again eluded her shadow. Bodyguards were great but it was hard to think sometimes when they hovered so protectively. Though with Jabb... it was something more. She found his presence distracting even when he was silent. There was something about him that she had been drawn to, found comforting and often led her to desire 'escort' for rides and walks when he was on duty. As she slowed to a cantor, half lost in thought, and didn't notice the wagon on the trail in front of her. Her horse stopped suddenly and jolted her to her senses. Seeing the man struggling with a tipped load she didn't think twice but slid from her horse and went to him. "Here, let me help." She smiled helping him lift a sack of flour.
As he thanked her, two more men came from around the wagon and flanked her. A third grabbed the reins of her horse leering. "Well looky here boys. We have ourselves one fey." He laughed as the other two came towards her. Nia's hand went to her hip where her dagger usually was and heard the man beside her laugh. She looked up to see him spinning the short knife. "Take her, boys."
She had brushed against him loading the sack and hadn't noticed he had stolen it. She screamed loudly but it was cut short as one man stepped forward and slapped her hard enough to cut her scream short and cut her lip on her teeth. As she closed her eyes to clear her head, she felt her arms captured and she opened her soft scared eyes in time to see the man who had slapped her grab the front of her riding dress and tear it open.
She stood before him in nothing but a thin see thru shift from the waist up as he leered once more. "Me first... need to breed them outta land I say..."
The man didn’t have the chance to finish as Grak appeared hissing and flinging himself at the man’s face. As the other two turned to help their leader a call could be heard nearing them. At first they didn’t understand was being shouted but as the steady beating of horse hooves drew nearer they could make out the words clearly. "Shard!!!" rang out Jabb’s battle cry. As Jabb thundered across the open field he leveled his bow and fried two arrows at the other two men who had not been attacked by Grak, as he passed them by Jabb leapt from his horse, his sword drawn, blade gleaming in the Suns light as he charged to Nia, two more men came into view who had from the looks of it, been gathering firewood while the others had set the ambush.
Grinning they met the lone soldiers charge thinking him a easy target for two well trained thieves. Jabb never slowed as he came at them the only thing flashing across his mind the sight of Nia and what they had almost did to her, as he neared them he dove into a roll coming up just a sword lengths in front of them as they jabbed there weapons down thinking to pin his body to the earth he sprung forward at them sword lashing out in a crossing motion in a block then twirling himself around he slashed down the arm of the first man while spinning back around he met the others sword and parried the blow stabbing the man through the chest.
Wrenching his sword free Jabb slammed the hilt of his blade into the man he had previously injured knocking him out cold as he called Grak back into the shadow he stood there facing the bandit leader, his henchmen dead, dying or out cold. "Do not reach for your weapon Bandit, or you shall fall like the leaves in the wind under the force of my blade."
Nia saw the great shadow cat leap for her would be attacker. His hand had been reaching for her and in the sudden attack her reach grabbed her and tossed all four of them to the ground. She struggled to get away as one of her holders aided the fallen one in their attack against Jabb. The other man grabbed her leg and tugged hard enough that her arms, reaching to help her crawl, were suddenly no longer able to hold her up. She twisted and cried out as her back and head hit the ground with a dull thud. The stun of landing caused her eyes to close a moment in the hopes she would recover and not pass out. As she opened them she noticed a small circle of guard surrounding the bunch. One lay on the ground unconscious or dead from Grak's pounce and the other three being bound and led off by the other guards. She glanced up at Jabb and smiled. "My hero..." she quipped and stood up. But as she did it so fast, the pain in her head stole her sight and in reaching for something to balance on she merely fell back to the ground unconscious.
