Location... Barracks basement in a forgotten storeroom... location was data loaded to Adam with a note that said "1600... training begins here"... It was signed by Liz....
**
She waited as she always did. Arriving early to set things up, she placed empty crates, boxes and droids in a compact area to simulate a small crowd. She hid a few weapons, needles, and even a small light saber handle. She wanted to see how much he would find. Upon entering he would see what appeared to be a pile of 'junk' stacked with no rhyme or reason in the corner. She herself was making sure all was ready when she smiled. “Ok, R4-J are you ready?” The small droid in the middle of the bunch chirped and warbled softly. She grit her teeth and stood almost in the middle of the room.
“Is the recorder going R4?” It chirped once more and she nodded. Good... everything was ready. Now... just the final touch. Clenching her fist against the coming moment of pain she faced the door and nodded.
__
When Adam arrived he would see Liz laying on the floor with a burn hole on the front of her shirt. Her body looking like it had been dumped with no regard for what happened, or who would find her. There was a tear in her pants' pocket and a corner of a ripped piece of paper.

Adam made his way to the location that Alizabeth had sent to him... an unused storeroom located underneath the barracks. He absent-mindedly wondered about the odd choice of scenerey for the interview, and what kind of tests he was in for as he entered the room. He stopped dead in his tracks, when he saw what awaited him.
Alizabeth lay on the floor, either dead or unconscious, a burn mark on her upper right torso. In an instant his DC-17 hand blaster was out of it's quick release holster and in Adam's hands. He side stepped away form the door so that his back was against the wall as he scanned the room, his finger resting on the trigger of his weapon. He couldn't see anyone lurking in the room, but with all the piles of junk stacked up, someone could have hidden themselves fairly well with relative ease.
Slowly and methodically, he swept the room, moving in between the stacked boxes and presumably defunct droids. as he searched the room he collected an assortment of weapons, knives, needles, and even a couple holdout blasters. Satisfied that the room was clear, he eased his way over to Alixabeth's prone form. Kneeling beside her, his weapon in one hand still trained on the door, he reached down with the other and felt for a pulse.

Liz watched from the corner of her eyes as she watched Adam's reaction. She was pleased he didn't rush straight to her side. It would have been careless and the R4 would have shot at him had he tried. Instead the unit remained inert as the soldier searched the room. When he finally came to her side she was once more eyes closed and seeming unconscious. As he felt for a pulse it would have been strong. She let her eyes flutter open. “It's a trap...” she whispered as a soft whiring sound at his back and the sting of a laser shot went by his shoulder. It was just above where he was. Like a warning shot it was there then gone. When he turned there would be no difference in the room.
Behind him was the 'cluster' of items. Boxes, four droids, and a few old robots, parts and full bodies were stacked and placed behind him. She gripped his arm and shook her head. "Get me out of here... please... hurry..." she closed her eyes a moment and took a deep breath to try and gather her thoughts. "The letter... it's lost...." She fell unconscious again.

A blaster shot flew over him as knelt beside Alizabeth. Something was still in the room with them. He turned and couldn't discern anything out of the ordinary, just the junk he had already inspected. The shot had come from the back ov the room, directly opposite the storeroom door. Come to think of it, with all of the scattered junk around the room, a path fro Alizabeth to the back of the room was oddly uncluttered, except fora rather large pile of scrap and parts.
Something wasn't right here. Whatever it was, had a clear shot to his exposed back, and yet it fired a complete miss. And what letter had Alizabeth been refering to before she slipped back into unconsiousness. One thing was for certain, he had to get her out of here quickly. Noticing a torn peice of flimsi on the ground he snatched it up before lifting Alizabeth onto his shoulders in a fireman's carry. He zig zagged behind stacks of boxes, usig them for cover as he made his way back towards the door. More shots rang out as he retreated, but they all went wild.
A meter from the door, Adam dashed for it, and once they were safely out he slammed the door shut. He placed Alizabeth on the ground gently before giving her a once, checking the seriousness of her wounds. "Alizabeth..."

Alizabeth looked up at Adam slowly and spoke, "Is it safe?" She then sat up before he could respond and smiled "Why did you bring me out instead of looking for who shot at us?" She smiled at the plassheet remnant in his hand and nodded. "Tell me why acted as you did from the moment you arrived." She wanted to know what he had thought, why he had chosen to do the things he had. Something told her he was perfect for the job. But this assignment couldn't be put together on gut instinct alone.

Adam smiled as Alizabeth sat up and immediately began bombarding him with questions about why he had reacted to the situation the way he had. The answers he gave seemed obvious to him. "Bear in mind that you informed me that there would be tests in involved, and in the message I recieved frm you earlier, you stated that "training begins here". I arrived expecting a surprise or two, but nothing like this. In fact, I wasn't completely sure that the whole thing was staged until I checked your pulse, it was too strong for you to really be unconscious. You told me to get you out, so I did." Standing up he offered his hand out to help Alizabeth to her feet. The room was randomly cluttered but it was too random, and there was an obvious line of sight to where I found you. The trajectory of the poorly guided shots gave me a pretty good indication of where the assailant, most likely a droid of some sort, was located. Knowing that, evacuating you to safety became my chief concern. The simulated crowd provided convenient cover for us, although I'm not sure you planned that. Now you are in no immediate danger... simulated or otherwise."

Alizabeth took his hand and rose up ending up standing slightly closer to him than she had planned. She kept his hand and smiled. "And if I had said to you to find and kill the one who had shot me; what would you have done?"
She realized how close she was and stepped back to lean on the door frame and watch him. Pulling the remote from her pocket, she walked into the room and held it pointed towards the pile before her. "Come out R4. The practice is over." A soft whir was heard and a moment later a droid rolled from around the back of the crowd. Nodding to R4 then to Adam, she smiled. "Adam, meet your assailant. This is R4. He is an attack practice droid I borrowed from the military training academy. He is the perfect shot you spoke of. He had orders to keep you alert but not to hit you." The R4 unit chirred and warbled slightly in greeting. She laughed softly then moved to sit on a nearby crate and her ebon hair fell tangled and tossled around her shoulders like a wild dirvish. She brushed it back absently though it did nothing to improve her mussy appearance. Looking at him as he stood there still slightly stunned in the doorway, she motioned to the other crate opposite her. "Come... tell me. What would you have done?"

Having just carried Alizabeth arouund on his shoulder, he was still acutely aware of how close she stood to him, and how her hand lingered in his. A droid revealed it's self then, from behind the pile of junk in the back of te storeroom. Right where Adam had guessed it was concealed. He smiled to himself thinking that he was still just as sharp as ever. He watched a little too intently as Alizabeth sat down on a crate and messed with her hair. Catching himself, he jerked his head towards the storeroom.
"I would have done exactly the same thing, except I would have thrown a couple thermal detonators in there on the way out. I'm glad you didn't though... you would have owed the military a new droid. "

She laughed as he spoke of blowing up the storeroom. "I am glad as well. Concussion from close quarters explosions are a killer on the ears and senses.” She laughed then and nodded once more for him to sit down. “Tell me what you found in the room. I noticed the small pile of weapons. But you missed other things. Take your time. I want you to search now, very carefully and tell me what you missed.” She nodded for the R4 to return to where it had been so its absence wouldn't throw off his search.
She waited to see what would come from it. She felt frazzled, but it was the kind of exhilaration one felt after a good scare or a great workout. It was the kind of thing that kept your heart racing and your head sharp. She was glad he had noticed that her pulse was false. It meant when time came to truly tell, he would have a baseline comparison. She lifted one booted heel onto the edge of the crate, wrapped her arms around it and rested her chin on her knee, looking more like a teenager than the older 20 something woman she was.

Missed some things? Maybe he had gotten a little rusty after all. He entered the room once again, and inspected everything for a second time. He wasn't about to leave without finding everything, but the minutes ticked by and nothing really leapt to his mind. Then he saw saw something. "Stang" he whispered to himself quietly as moved over to it. He removed a something a kin to a lightsaber hilt from a droid's leg. it blended in almost perfectly with the metal of the droid... No wonder he didn't notice it before. He sighed before turning back to where Alizabeth continued to wait.
"There is no sign of your missing letter that I can see. As for this..." He hefted the hilt of the lightsaber, "I doubt that even I could match a Sith or a Jedi. Not that I wouldn't try."

She smiled as he finally found the one weapon that could have snuck up on him and her. "Very good. It's not easy. But where we are going, I cannot guarantee there will not be Jedi or worse who wish this not to happen. I can only say that pistols and arms are not the only thing to seek. As to what you missed...." She hopped off the crate and moved to stand between the R4 and the droid that had been concealing the saber. "Come look and tell me what looks amiss." She tried not to point it out but finally did. There on the leg of the droid was her recorder. It was in plain sight and since it had been on a droid she had claimed she had procured herself, he had probably dismissed it as anything amiss. "This is a recorder. But how easily could it have been an explosive device? And while I said I procured it from the military, what is to say they did not tamper with it in hopes of an unfortunate accident?" She pocketed the device but did not shut it off.
Moving to sit back on the box, she tilted her head and looked at him as she once more pulled her knee to her chin and relaxed. "I wish you to be in civilian attire at my side. We will manage the tailoring so you can still conceal and carry weapons. I am sure at least a small pistol will be occasionally visible to those consciously looking. But I do not wish it to be overly obvious. You will be my attache and responsible for simple things like handing me my briefcase if out of my reach, or taking items being passed from one to another to myself. Like the taste testers of old before we had droids to check our foods in hairy situations, you will be putting your life and your blood before mine. Are you willing to do that?" She watched to see his reactions. Everything right now was happening fast, but so was the Drunkenwell itinerary. She had no time to cosset and train and ween him into the idea of being a bodyguard versus being a soldier in a platoon. There were no other guys at your back save those with the group. Surely there would be other military personnel in the area and some even detailed to protect her on-planet, but she wanted Adam to know he would be above those in importance to her. She waited to ask the other question on her mind. Listening and obeying her desires and wishes was only part of it. Could he handle the other part?

She smiled slightly. He was intuitive. He sensed the unspoken in her. “You said you can do as I need, as I order, as I bid...” She lifted her chin from her knee and stared straight at him. “Can you also order me? Can you tell me to do something then follow through with making me do it if I turn stubborn or pigheaded because you know, in your skill set that what you ask is in our best interest, best interest of survival and support needs. Can you pick me up as you did a moment ago when you thought me unconscious, throw me over your shoulder and carry me kicking and screaming in protest? Can you grab me if I am crying uncontrollably and shake me or slap my face to make me focus because to do otherwise, to cosset me and allow me a moment of grief could kill me or us?” she looked at him. This was not an easy question. His answer, while important, was not as important as how long it took him to answer. Too long a silence meant he was struggling with the response. Contrariwise, too swift of a response may not have involved as much thought as the situation needed.
Sometimes you had to slap someone, even a superior, to make them see reason. Could he do it? Could he look in her beautiful eyes, the depth of which held not only fear, but desire for something better, and say straighten up... lead us... save us all... could he do it and still look himself in the mirror the next day?

"I said that I would do whatever is necessary and I meant it. I will not throw away our lives needlessly. If I think you are making a bad decision I will call you on it. Hopefully, if you value my skills, I won't have to resort to dragging you around kicking and screaming. That doesn't mean that I won't..." As time went on Adam, had begun to glimpse a depth to Alizabeth that he had only surmised at before. The way she spoke, and the difficult questions she asked... They all gave him some insight into her character, and he hadn't the slightst inclination that she would breakdown should something happen while on Druckenwell. "If something I say or do bothers you, feel free to let me know... afterwards."

Alizabeth smiled and nodded. “I promise...” she winked and added, “Just may not be always able to hold my tongue till 'afterward'.” She laughed again and motioned once more to the box opposite herself. “Have a seat. I wanted to tell you what we are doing. I am hoping to gather one more body guard, and someone from Intel. With myself and those two, plus you three and the reporter, the group will be 7 in total. Should we get split up, the reporter will join Intel and they will go off separate from me. I want two soldiers with each group. I will let you choose, do you wish to be with me or with the others? Tal and Masor will get a choice too. Also, please know that should it be absolutely necessary, there may come a point I ask you to leave me, if you are in my group. Should that become necessary, it will be for a better cause then either of us. I will never send you off simply because I wish to be a martyr.”
She shook her head and her eyes closed slightly as she looked down as her hands twined together around her knees. Her voice finished the thought a bit lower in volume than it had been moments before. “I am not that brave.” She didn't look up as she continued. “I merely mean that the joining of Drunkenwell to the Republic is the single most important thing that this mission is to accomplish. No matter what else happens... that must be accomplished. If it fails, then someone must report back here with the true reason why. Not the military story or the political one. But the truth.” She glanced up but her eyes didn't quite reach him this time as if afraid to show the fear in her dark orbs to the one she was supposed to be showing a strong front to. “Do you understand?”

"There is no such thing as bravery, only degrees of fear." Adam heard her voice dwindle down to a almost a murmur. He looked at her, and when she couldn't meet his eyes he put his hand underneath her chin a lifted her head towards his until their eyes met. "You want the galaxy to know what you attempted on Druckenwell should we fail. I understand that, but if you try to send me away without you... It will be one of those things where your rebuke will have to wait until later. I won't quit on a mission unless the job is done, and as long as I am able, I will leave no one behind. We won't fail."
Adam grinned mishieviously. "Is this one of those times where I should shake you violently?"

Adam chuckled at the thought of his XO Union Creed, Sarissa, and the others. Being bested by a woman was the least of his worries. "There are woman in the Devil Dogs that could probably wipe the floor with me. Although I don't make it a habit picking fights with them... What sort of fighting experience do you have anyway? It doesn't seem like a skill a politician would usually need." He continued to stare into Alizabeth's eyes, unable to look away. He couldn't help the way she kept licking her lips though...

Liz smiled and moved just a touch closer still. “I am sure there are more powerful women around. But they are not joining me, are they?” She let her eyes stare straight into his as her voice lowered to a seductive level and she was close enough to reach out and lick the edge of his lips if she so desired. “You ask what I am capable of? Shall I show you, my...” she paused for dramatic effect, “dearest....” she got close enough to kiss him and spoke his name almost without sound. Breathed out like a dark desire, “Adam....”
Tilting her head up slightly to look into his eyes as if seeking permission her free hand would reach to caress his hair and run over his cheek before sliding into his hair once more. Then she would jerk his head back hard with a handful of sandy blond hair and the knife in her other hand would press its tip into his ribcage. Her smile was vicious and predatory as she heard his sharp, startled intake of breath. Her hand was licked in his golden locks and her knife was poised to slip between his lower two ribs should he try to shove forward. And her knee still braced between them protected her own ribs from any blade he tried to pull on her now. What was probably more startling than the fact she had gained a momentary upper hand was that she stayed close enough to kiss and her face never wavered. There was no poker tell that gave him a clue to what she had planned next... or how she had come to this point without giving him cause to think it possible.

There it was, a knife hidden in her boot. He laughed as he cut his eyes downward so that he could see Alizabeth, even though his head was being pulled back. "You know... you shouldn't really play with knives. Someone could get hurt. In this case... mainly me." Clearly she thought she had him backed into a corner. Adam was slightly annoyed with himself for being caught off gaurd again. After all was said and done, he was willing to chalk this up as an off day. Maybe he shouldn't have had those drinks last night afterall.
Had she forgotten that he had his hand under her chin... just inches away from her lovely throat? Adam weighed the odds of her actually stabbing him with that knife of hers, and then grabbed her throat. Not with enough pressure to cut off her air flow, just enough to show her that he could if he wanted.
***
05-10-2011, 11:06 PM Liza
She had expected him to grab her hand from his hair, or try to swipe at the knife. In an extreme possibility she thought he may draw a blade or pistol of his own. The fact that he had chosen to choke her was enough of a shock that she was actually truly caught off guard. Her hand released his hair and in a panic the knife dropped and both hands went to the wrist at her throat. The eyes that had been cold and calculating a moment before, were suddenly full of raw shock and unrealized fear. For just a moment, he would see a vulnerability and scared child instead of a strong and stubborn woman. No one had caught this glimpse in over a decade and the thought he had seen it scared her more, perhaps, than his reaction to his test. She froze a moment holding his wrist, grasping it as if for dear life as she tried to will her mind to come back to the moment.
All that was in the blink of an eye.
As she heard the weapon clatter to the floor, her rage that he had caught her unaware was almost maddening. She pushed with her knees trying to topple him to the floor. Her hands, clawed at his wrist and tried to free herself. As her legs straightened towards him and her back arched away, he would be caught with a choice... fall over on top of her or risk the knees knocking his breath from his abdomen. It wasn't a rehearsed reaction now. This was pure survival panic that had filled her. And in such, she was not holding back her reaction... or her strength.
For a moment, she was lost in the training... and not teaching it.

The look of terror on Aizabeth's face was startling. Adam hadn't even tried to actually choke her, but here she was acting as if he was killing her. She clawed at his wrists and pushed her knees out against him. Rather than manuever so that he fell on top of her, possibbly scaring her even worse, he let her push him away.He Rolled backwards with the blow so that he could give her some space. Adam stood up slowly and deliberately, giving Alizabeth time to calm down.
"See what I mean? Degrees of fear... You were scared, but you still fought back."

As he toppled off her and landed on the floor she leapt up and took a stance as if ready to accept his return to do more harm. But as he spoke her mind cleared and she realized where she was.
“See what I mean? Degrees of fear... You were scared, but you still fought back.” His words echoed as if far away and it took a moment before she realized he was talking about her.
She took a couple deep breaths and closed her eyes as she leaned back on the crate she had been perched on a moment ago. “You are right. I am sorry. I didn't mean to act like that. I had just thought you would grab my hand, or try for your own weapon. I guess it caught me off guard when you grabbed my throat.” She reached absently to her own neck and realized she didn't even feel where his hand had been. There had never been any pressure and he had never wanted to really hurt her.
Looking up it dawned on her how hard she had grasped his hair. Her eyes, calmer now than a moment ago, still showed that shadow of vulnerability she had had a moment ago. “I hope I didn't hurt you. I had wanted a gut reaction from you, not a thought out, training- in- mind one.” She reached down and retrieved the dagger and slid it back into her boot before choosing to slide down the crate and sit on the floor. Taking a moment to compose herself, she looked back at him. Her already tussled hair was even worse now but she didn't seem to care. Her breathing had slowed and she managed to grin. “Bet my heartbeat isn't strong and regular right now, huh?” She laughed softly but it seemed almost forced.

"When you train for something long enough, it becomes second nature. next time you are in a situation like that... remember to put yourself where the person who is asaulting you has both of their hands preoccupied... not the other way around." Adam was glad that she had calmed down somewhat as he reached back behind his head and rubbed the spot where Alizabeth had tried to yank his hair out. Alizabeth was stronger than she looked. "No worries. You can make it up to me. And I'm sure my hair wiill grow back eventually. I can always where a cap until then. So tell me... do you have anymore tricks up your sleeve? Anymore nasty surprises."

Alizabeth looked at him and bit her lip smiling. “I am sorry, Adam. I hadn't meant to pull so hard.” As he asked if there was anything else up her sleeve, she shook her head. “No, afraid not. Had things gone differently, we may have sparred a bit. But as it is, I believe we both know what the other is capable of.” She leaned her head back against the plassteel crate behind her and smiled easily. “Was this what you thought of when I said 'it begins here'? Finding me unconscious then at the hilt end of a knife? I met with Tal this morning. His interview went quite a different direction. So there will be some interesting note comparisons should you all choose to meet and laugh at my expense.” She smiled and waved a hand as if he was going to protest. “It's all right. Something tells me you aren't one to kick and tell.” She winked teasing him. “To be honest, I have nothing left. R4....” She called to the droid who came obediently to her side. Setting the remote inside its chest storage cavity, she smiled and patted its leg. “Back to the training racks. Please give the Masters my sincerest thanks for your use. You did very well. Thank you. I will be up tomorrow to settle my debt.” She watched as the droid chirped and then rolled out the door.
Once gone, she slowly let her legs stretch. “I am famished. Care to join me for an early dinner? I mean, if you don't have plans.” The time had gone longer than she had planned. It was nearly 1800 already and she was starving. She made a mental note to herself to next time spread the tests out more across several days rather than all in one day. Moving as if to get up off the floor she watched and waited for his response. Surely he had someplace else to be. But it seemed rude to merely dismiss him after they had practically killed one another. She laughed softly and moved to rise.

Adam offered his hand to help Alizabeth to her feet one more time. Careful to watch for any sign that she had anothr surprise planned. He hadn't realized how hungry he actually was until she had mentioned her own hunger. "I can honestly say this has been the most interesting interview I have ever had. All i had planned for today was this little meeting and some P.T., and you certainly took care of that. I could definately go for a bite to eat."

She took his offered hand and rose easily with his strength to aid her. As she saw him glance her up and down she laughed. “Nothing but a recorder, Cadet.” She winked and raised her other hand. “Care to search?” She laughed and watched his reaction. When he made no move she nodded and slowly let go of his hand. “I am glad you found this time worthy of your own. I try to keep things interesting. No point in boring you or you won't want to help keep me alive.” She glanced back over her shoulder before looking down and gathering her bag from under the crate she had been leaning on. “Oh yeah... you missed this too.” She laughed and headed for the door. “Shall we?” She held a hand towards him beckoning him to go first. “I promise not to feint.” She winked once more and laughed, nearly back to her old self again.

"Thats okay, I didn't mind carrying you around." Adam seriouslu considered taking her up on the offer to search her, but in the end he decided that there was no need. He motioned for Alizabeth to go ahead of him. He was nothing if not a gentleman. "Ladies first."
