Devon & Baranthus
THE GOODBYE

The time had come. Devon, Baranthus and Catalia were sitting on the balcony of the Winterwolfe Estate, overlooking the moonlit gardens, listening to the servants cleaning up from the evening's fete.
“I can't believe you two are leaving tomorrow.” Catalia sighed, kicked off her heels and tucked her legs under her layers of silk and lace that made up her gown. “Seems like yesterday when we still had years to go.” Her eyes glistened slightly though she forced a smile and a laugh.
Devon smiled and leaned back against the balcony railing sipping his drink. “We knew we couldn't stay kids forever, Cat.” He laughed. “Besides, I'm looking forward to seeing what's out there.” He lightly punched Baranthus on the shoulder as his blood brother sat, back to him, facing the young woman. “Aren't you, old man?”
Baranthus grabbed his shoulder and cried out in mock pain. “OW! Young Pup!” Without warning, Baranthus swept his leg out and hooked Devon’s ankle. Grabbing the front of the other man's jacket as he began to roll from his chair, Baranthus turned slightly and the two rolled to the flagstone and were suddenly tussling like young brothers. “Old man, huh? Only by a couple days, pup!”
Devon cried out and dropped his glass over the railing as flailing arms grabbed at Baranthus as they fell. “HEY!” As he came down on the stone, one leg wrapped over his friend and he shifted his weight with his hip as the pivot point. Baranthus ended up beneath him pinned down. The two of them now laughing like children.
A tiny pair of bare feet appeared by Baranthus' head. As they both looked up to see a scorn faced Catalia looking down at them, hands on her hips like a disapproving mother, they looked at one another and broke into more hysterical laughter.
“Really boys... in your good suites?” She was about to give them both a good verbal lashing when Baranthus winked at Catalia and she suddenly found herself falling.
Baranthus had grabbed her ankle, and Devon her wrist, and together they pulled her down into the little pile and kept laughing. “OH! MY DRESS!” She cried. But as their laughter only increased at her petulant howl, she couldn't help herself. A moment later all three were laughing as they slowly untangled and leaned against the balcony railing wall.
Trying to brush off the hopelessly wrinkled and smudged dress, Cat began to calm down first. “I'm going to miss you two this year. A whole year seems so very long.” She rested her head on Baranthus' shoulder and linked her arm with Devon’s. “You will both come back, right? Promise me you will both come back to me.” Her voice caught in her throat as she suddenly found herself once more fighting back tears.
Devon nudged her shoulder with his forehead and gave his most dashing smile and a wink. “Of course, Catalia. Why would we not?”
Baranthus kissed the top of her head. “Aye, Little Cat... o' course we'll come back to ye. Our word on it.”
Squeezing Devon's hand she leaned over and kissed his forehead. Moving to her knees, she leaned and kissed Baranthus on the cheek. Standing up she looked down at the two men who had both been like brothers and yet so much more for as long as she could remember. “One year... not a day longer!” She bit her lip and backed up to retrieve her shoes. “You promised....” And without another word, she ran into the house and was gone.
