Left down another alley... Right down another street... Cut thru another business... across another busy intersection...
Alexa walked and ran back and forth across the city. Sometimes back tracking, but always working her way towards the airport. Her super fast speed meant there were times where open space allowed her to elude those following her. But like any major city, Misawa, Japan had more crowded than clear places. “The trick,” she smiled as she thought to herself while hailing a cab, “is all in the timing.” She slid into the cab and gave the driver her destination just as her closest pursuers appeared between two buildings a couple blocks behind her.
They would find her, she had no illusions about that. But she hoped it wouldn't be today.
Being fast and immortal was an asset when moving thru crowds or cities. But suddenly arriving at the airport with luggage in hand would draw too much attention. Paying the cab as she stepped out, she took a quick look around and swiftly stepped inside the terminal. The wrapped bundle slung over her shoulder appeared to anyone else like an overly long pool cue case, or even a drafting tube.
It was less than 20 minutes and she was heading through security with her ticket. A single glance at the officer viewing the security camera and her parcel went through without a hitch.
Another 30 minutes later and she was boarding her plane. She was going home. Home. Back to Serenade, the wolves, and hopefully, some much needed and desired peace and quiet.
She settled into her first-class seat and tucked her parcel between the side of her seat and the wall of the aircraft. Watching the other first-class passengers find and settle into their seats, she felt their minds. She wasn't very well trained in the Arts so all she could manage was the confirmation that none were undead, and none meant her any immediate harm.
Alexa relaxed enough to close her eyes. Her senses remained open in case one of them followed her. She half listened to the murmur of those around her... till there was complete silence.
Silence? On a plane? In the first-class section?
Opening her eyes, the sight that beheld her would have caused her heart to race, if it had been beating at all. All of the passengers in the forward section they all occupied, were asleep. It may not have been a questionable thing except for the man who was laying a blanket over one of the passengers. He had a look of calm as if he were covering up a child. But the strangest thing of all was that she couldn't feel him there. She saw his body, even looked straight into his eyes. Before she realized it, she was standing up in the aisle barely five feet from him. She hadn't remembered coming to her feet, or even moving, but she managed to speak though her voice cracked.
“Lord Ashton... what... why are you here?”
The man bowed his head in recognition as a slight smile touched his lips. “I am pleased you remembered me, Lady Moroveston.”
Alexa suddenly grabbed the nearest seat back as the plane began to roll.
“Perhaps, Lady, we should take our seats. I am immortal, but I do prefer comfort.” Ashton laughed softly gesturing to her vacated seat behind her. “Especially since such a pretty penny was spent on first-class.” He nodded gentlemanly to her to proceed him.
She nodded and moved to settle into her seat. Ashton sat beside her just as the plane lifted its front wheel and began its ascent.
Once in the air and leveled out, a stewardess came thru a curtain behind them and offered them refreshments. Ashton casually touched her hand, murmured a polite, “No thank you. We will be fine the rest of the flight. As will everyone else. Please tell the others.”
The young lady blushed as if Ashton had touched more than her hand and said more than a simple No thank you.
As the curtain to the main cabin was slid back into place behind the woman, Ashton resettled himself and closed his eyes. He crossed his outstretched legs, laced his fingers together and took on a quality of stillness that no mortal was capable of.
Pressing her senses almost to the point of starting a headache, Alexandra still couldn't feel the man at her side. Rubbing her temple, she frowned as his soft words echoed in her ears and also caressed her mind.
“Easy, Little One... You will not sense me unless I allow it. There is no need trying where you cannot succeed.” he taunted her on purpose. He was there for a reason, and he had to be sure it was going to be worth it.
Leaning back in her seat, Alexandra sighed. Biting her lip, she half mumbled, “I'll never know my boundaries or surpass them if I don't try.” She knew she sounded like a petulant child. Closing her eyes she rested her hand on the case tucked safely beside her. She would figure out Ashton later. If she didn't nap now, and conserve what strength she had left, she may not be able to make the flight to Serenade before the sun rose shortly after they were to land.
Ashton smiled sensing her fall asleep and helped her by nudging her mind just enough that her sleep would be deep and restful.
She would definitely be worth it.
