New Blood01-09-2017, 09:49 AM Dukes Swowtha The Ubesian walked back and forth nervously as he waited for his name to be called. Sweat rolled down his cheek, eyes dart everywhere as Dukes finally decides to sit down. He derailed his train of thoughts that did not help him currently. As seconds bled into minutes, he reminisced about his previous life before being drafted into the New Republic Army. It somehow calmed him for some reason. An Ubesian in his middle age, Dukes was a little bit dark for his race. His eyes were glowing in brown unlike his other fellow people who had blue eyes. He looked exactly like a regular human being to most people due to his appearance. He grew up in the snowy regions of Uba IV; his father was a respectable military man while his mother was bedridden due to a disease that plagued the region for fifteen months. He was an ice harvester for a living. He had a background in the Planet's local militia, serving in the Defense Force for three months. Being stationed on a big city was hard, but he has to earn some credits for his family. He was the second child among his five siblings; two brothers and two siblings. His older brother died as a soldier when the Planet fell on a civil war. His younger sister died in the same plague that makes his mother suffer. He never get to join the civil war as a militia man due to the fact that the war ended two years before he could even join the Defense Force. He left his planet to join the New Republic for a better living. He admits to himself that the militia was nothing compared to enlisting here on the New Republic. He was not certain if he's gonna make it or not. He hopes he make it. Soon enough, waiting is over as the door of the room opened with a hiss. Dukes stood straight up, and readied himself to salute whoever is coming through that door.

Ari had pulled recruiting duty once more. She didn't mind, since not much else was happening. When she saw the newest recruit had been placed in her queue, she rose from the desk in the bare, temporary office that had been given to her for the day, and headed for the gathering room. She had expected several folks to be in the room, as there often was, but this time only one person was present. He rose as she palmed open the door and smiled to him. "Mr. Swowtha? Come with me, please." She guessed the others had been called to other rooms like the one she was heading to.
While not in formal military regalia, she was in her basic uniform. Tunic and breeches clean, hair pulled back in a braid, then tucked up off her collar. She moved like a dancer, and there were obvious muscles in her motion, despite the lack of bulk. The mechanic was strong where it mattered, but bulk got in the way when under the consoles of some of the older ships. She preferred tone to roping and there was certainly nothing meek about her. No one would mistake her as a pampered officer, even at first glance.
Motioning to the chair opposite her, she went around the desk and smiled once more. "Have a seat." She watched him enter and waited to see his reaction. The office was drab a bare. Generic holos on the wall showed a space scene on one wall, and a formation of XWings in flight on the other. No other adornments, save her desk and the two chairs were in the room. "Can I offer you a drink?" She nodded to the pitcher and glasses on the corner of the desk closest to him. Water was in the pitcher, but it looked clear and clean and cold."

"Sure, thanks." Dukes replied with a hearty, yet nervous smile as he sat on the chair. He glanced around, studying his surroundings. He then finally set his sight on the mechanic in front of him.
The Ubesian let out a sigh as he tried to relax himself. He was trying to hide his emotion at the officer. They might think that he was a scaredy-cat and would result with them rejecting him just because he was afraid of a little interview, much less an intergalactic war.
His head was cleanly shaved but it will regrow to a faster rate due to their alien nature. He was not even sure if the officer he was talking to even know of his Ubesian origins. Maybe if she read his file? He set aside his thoughts as he prepared his ears to listen to what the officer will say and ask.

Arianna poured the young man a drink and smiled sliding it towards him. "First off, you can relax. My name is Cadet Ariana Talien. I'm a mechanic for Rogue Squadron and have served as Hanger Chief on Republic One. I'm going to do your intake interview. It's being recorded and at some point an officer may come in to ask you questions or I'll get permission too approve you and get you started." She smiled letting it sink in a moment. Sometimes having a Cadet conducting the interview got interesting responses. Some liked the idea of not having to deal with brass. Others were on edge, constantly expecting some high ranking officer to bang the door in and yell at them. She had even had one recruit refuse the interview thinking Ari couldn't 'possibly' be qualified.
"I've been doing interviews for over a year and assure you this is normal. Is that acceptable?" The poor guy seemed as nervous as a nexu in the middle of Coruscant. Out of his element in more ways than one. She hoped revealing her lower rank would help settle his nerves.

At the sound of her assuring words, Dukes relaxed but his head jolted to the left when he heard a book fell from a shelf. He gulped as he shifted his focus back at the interviewer that turns out to be a Cadet, which he'll also become if ever he passed this interview. Resting both palms at the armrest, he heaved a deep sigh in an effort to soften his tensed muscles. He slowly lifted the drink from the table and sipped. He then placed the half-filled glass back and finally responded, "Yes, let's start." A fart suddenly echoed throughout the room. Dukes froze then glanced at his pants and lied, "Uh, I guess I'm gonna need new trousers anytime soon." Just to save himself from the awkward situation.

Ari had had nervous folks before her in the past, but this one reminded her of a nexu in a droid factory, jumping at sounds like his tail being chased. Hoping to get him to relax, she started her questioning.
"So tell me why you're here? I mean besides your loyalty to the Republic, which I hope is a given." Everyone said loyalty. But loyalty had to be tested and tried. There was no way to prove it here...
...at least not without scaring the star dust out of the prospects.

"I've been asked the same question when I was stationed on a box canyon in the middle of nowhere. This guy, my friend, would ask me, why am I here. What am I doing here? And why did I chose to be here? Well, the answer is simple, I am not here because of the priviledge or the paycheck the New Republic would give me. I am not here because of honor. But I am here because I want to serve. I don't care about medals or awards, as long as I have duty. As long as I serve the good guys. The galaxy, as we know it, is already torn apart. I will not be another problem who will destroy more of galaxy's system, because it has already suffered enough. I wanna be the solution that will erase that problem. That's why..."
...I am here, knocking on your door."

Arianna laughed. "Well it's a good thing you knocked. I have heard blaster fire isn't a good way to get good attention." She hoped his sense of humor was a good one. They were a laid back bunch, the military. While the soldiers tended to be a bit more strict on the field, she had discovered off the field, they were like a giant sports team with jokes, banter, practical jokes and plenty of friendship. Whatever animosity they had in friendly rivalry though, disappeared once the bells tolled and they were called to don the uniforms and get into it. She was hoping he was one of those.
"So what kinds of skills do you have that you bring? And what do you think you want to work on the most?" While asking for strengths and weaknesses seemed a silly thing, it was more an exercise in admission. Admitting you needed help in one area allowed others to use their skills to help you. And if you were someone who could help others, then that was paid in full circle for what you needed help with. Arianna was horrible with blaster pistols and she hadn't picked a rifle up since training. But she could fly fairly well. She didn't have reflexes for combat, she had proven that in plenty of sims, but she knew enough to give a boost of confidence to a pilot who was wavering in his own. And in return, she could also teach them a thing or two about their ships. She knew them all, inside and out. And knowing your ship made you a better pilot.
And while she doubted this one wanted to turn a wrench, she knew he would have skills he could teach others and ones he would need help in.
The question was, would he admit his weakness or merely brag his prowess in those he was best at?

He looked at her and said, "It would be silly if I tell you war stories about my time when I joined a local militia." He began, "but the truth is, I haven't seen combat in my entire life. I don't know the smell of blaster fire, surrounded by dead people or anything about combat but I do know a thing or two about firing a rifle. I know about ice harvesting, I am not sure if it would be a helpful skill; in the ice maybe but in jungle or desert, I guess it's useless. I have been in a few fist fights," he looked down on the ground, "something that I am not proud of. I've took up a few hand-to-hand combat lessons about stick fighting and kickboxing with a little bit of grappling and throwing people away." He looked back at her. "But we know that it would be useless against a force-using Sith." Then laughed.
