Jean was done with sickbay and went to the bridge to not only get the feel of the place he would be working a lot but to find the captain and check in with her. He liked being on the bridge and it was a huge step away from his last job as an archaeologist. He found the cabin and pressed the chime while running his finger through his thick hair.
Commander Jean Francios Millet, XO
Having chosen to spend the day on the ship, and not availing herself of the accomidations and fun the locals offered, Ari was in her Captain’s office off the side of the bridge. She was in her regular clothes. A tunic top of deep sapphire blue and a pair of loose pants in a slightly darker hue that gathered at her ankles. Her boots were under her seat and her legs were curled up under her as she was going over something on the padd in her hand.
“Come,” she called out as the chime rang out. She wondered who was going to ask what, now. A slight smile on her face in preparation for some elaborate request for the refit list.
Capt. Arialla Bovar
Commanding Officer
Jean Francois came in and smiled at her. “Bonjour Madam. I am Jean Francois Millet. Your new Executive officer and I am checking in with you.” He was wearing light tan kakis and a darker brown sweater with a white shirt peaking out of the top and he had a brown jacket on. He was very well dressed and matched. “Do you want me to come at a different time?”
Commander Jean-Francios Millet, XO
She looked up blankly for a moment, her eyes looking him up and down. Suddenly she smiled and shook her head. “Commander Millet, my apologies.” She smiled and stood up, the padd moving to the table. She reached out a hand to shake. “A pleasure, please… sit. I have tea and juice but can fetch you something else if you desire. Again, I’m sorry. I hadn’t expected you till tomorrow.” She moved to the small table off to the side of the room where a hot tea kettle was still steaming under it’s cover and a pitcher of apple juice sat.

He shook her hand but didn’t let go and looked her straight in the eyes. “It is Mill-lay, not Mill-let.” He let go of her hand. “People always get my name wrong even though they see almost everyday on bottles everywhere and in art museums. But I digress. I would love some tea and a bit of honey in it as well. Merci.” He took off his jacket and sat down while folding the jacket neatly over his lap. “I arrived yesterday actually and took some leave before coming here to look at this place. Why have you not gone out to explore this pretty land. It is like one of Monet’s paintings out there. Bright and beautiful, just like you if you do not mind me saying so.” His accent is think and she might need to have him repeat things but will soon be able to understand him.
XO
Her body hitched slightly as he kept the hand a moment longer. “Forgive me, Commander. Mil-lay..” She nodded and was grateful when he let go. His hands were warm and he knew how to hold it just right. Like a handshake should be. She always hated she had never mastered the skill. It wasn’t exactly a course at the Academy.
As he mentioned the tea, she nodded and poured him a cup. Bringing it over to him, complete with saucer, she set it on the table and went back for the honey from the cupboard, and a spoon from the tray on the sideboard. Moving back to her seat, one leg curling back under her, she set the honey down and handed him the spoon. “If it’s not hot enough let me know. I will get some more.” On the table, already, were a few tins of tea bags to choose from. A lavender, Earl Grey and Vulcan herbal were the most visible as if used most often. Lavender rose up from the half full cup before her. “And I have to apologize, also for my lack of knowledge on wines. I fear I am by no means a connesiour. I only know if I like something when I drink it. And can rarely recall what it is when I think on it a year later.”
He waved his hand without looking at her and in a flat tone just simply said; “Most commoners do not. It is ok.” And he picked up the lavender bag and put it in his tea and began stooping it. He used the honey spoon and put some in while he he stooping and stared it around some and blew on the. “Tis fine. Merci for the tea.”
Leaning back in her seat, her other foot rose, her heel perching on the edge of the chair. Sipping her tea, she smiled. “But I understand you grew up around the wineries of your family. It must be beautiful there.” As she said beautiful, she glanced out the window. “I guess it’s just another planet,” she replied to his unanswered query of why she hadn’t left the ship. “I went down the first day we were here. Fresh air inhaling and all that. But I find I think best without the distractions of others running and milling about.” She nodded to the padd on the table before them.

After taking a sip and letting it linger on his taste buds for a few he swallowed. “Oui. It is in the Bordeaux region of France and it is very beautiful. We have a couple thousand acres of very old vines. We make the second finest red wines in the world and the best from France. I did bring you a nice bottle as a gift but I left it in my room. I will get it for you later. Forgive me.”
He took another sip. “Well plants grow out of rocks with no water and they breath methane on this planet. It is very curious how they can do that but I guess evolution and the ability to stay and conquer in ones own environment and adapt.”
XO
She nodded at his thanks for the tea. “It sounds like an amazing place. I’d be curious how you manage to maintain the vines thru so many generations without stripping them or the soil. I would think you have to replace the crops periodically to keep the soil from failing.” When he mentioned the planet, she paused her drink halfway to her lips and a serious look came over her face.
“It is very easy to put nitrogen back into the ground and it is a very, very delicate and time consuming venture to run and make sure the vines are healthy. But if you knew about our wine then you would know how worth it it is.”
“Methane breathing rock plants?” He had her interest. “Where? We didn’t scan any such things when we arrived.” She actually dropped her foot to the floor and set her cup down before picking up the padd, her fingers swiping to get the initial planet reports again. She had missed his jest and poke at her isolation. And if she had thought about it, he had read her file and knew her science obsessive background.
She was looking at the report intently as if she had actually missed something vital. Something more than the joke at her expense.

(D’oh!)
“Oui. I can show you madam if you would like me too?” He smiled but hid it with the cup by taking in the tea and its aroma.
XO
She frowned and looked at him. “Wait… you know where these are? How?” It still hadn’t dawned on her that the XO who was just checking in, was teasing her. She set the padd down and glanced out the window. “Maybe on the edge of the continent. We didn’t explore there. The cave systems were unstable.” She was trying to suss out why they would have skipped over such an intriguing discovery.
But she hadn’t done more than look over the info on the sections that seemed suitable for use. She wouldn’t have necessarily looked into why there were methane readings someplace.

He tried his best to keep from smiling. “I would be happy to show you. It is only five miles or so due North. We can go now and be back before nightfall?” He will play this out for as long as he could and to prove that he could get her outside. But he wondered with her scientific mind how there could be plants breathing methane and everyone else is breathing oxygen. She must have a million things going on right now.
Jean-Francois, XO
She frowned as she started to slip her sneakers on. “Ok but I don’t get…” she paused and frowned. With one shoe on and the other still under her chair, she looked at him. “There aren’t any cave systems within five miles. We made sure of it. That’s the only place a methane environment might exist without being read as part of the general atmosphere.” She looked at him, her own lip starting to curl up.
He just stared at her.
“Something tells me I have just been had?” She smiled and shook her head, but instead of anger, she was blushing in embarrassment and her lips were fighting not to laugh.

“Oui. But there is a very nice scenic overlook at the spot that I mentioned and we can go and see it, drink some wine and have a picnic, is that how you say? Yes. A picnic and watch the sun set in the pasture.....just like one of Monet’s and Millet’s paintings. What do you say? Get out of this stuffy office that you will be trapped in for who knows how long. Live life and look at the wonders and beauty before you instead of through a PaDD or microscope. I know I have and I love what I see.”
Jean-Francios, XO
Her eyes narrowed slightly. “Just picnic and sunset. But then we come back. Or I do, at least. There are still morning reports to look into.” She leaned down and grabbed her other show to put on. “Is this acceptable or do I need to change?” She asked as she stood and moved to put her cup on the tray across the room. The chef would send someone for it after she left word she was leaving. “And we can stop in the mess for the meal. I am sure there is stuff we can container up real quick.”
The idea of getting off the ship was making her brain scream yes. But going to watch a sunset with the new XO was sending other signals. And sadly, one’s she wasn’t familiar enough with to recognize as anything other than apprehension.

“I was fine with this jacket so maybe a shaw or something. But my intentions are clearing honorable madam Captain. If I was trying to seduce you I know I would succeed. I am very confident in my abilities. Plus this will help us get to know each other more instead of what we read of each other on PaDDs. You need this release Madam Captain. Please let me achieve this release with you and some fine wine and whatever the galley has to offer.” He stood up and bowed politely.
Jean-Francios, XO
She didn’t have a shawl, but she opened a nearby cabinet and pulled out her Fleet zip up over sweater. It was nearly identical to her uniform top, but slightly more loose fitting and easily put on. “All right,” she said draping it over her arm. “We can stop by the kitchen. Though I am not sure what wines we have, or how ‘fine’ they are compared to what you are used to.” She laughed and shook her head moving out of her quarters. “And I happen to like my Padd,” she added with a slight laugh.
As they moved towards the kitchen, she nodded to the occasional person they passed. “And I wasn’t working, so I don’t see the big deal about me staying on the ship. I was working on a personal project.” She had a hint of indignation in her voice, but it was more to prove she wasn’t ‘always’ working.
