Leef walked through the gardens of the palace of Aren'Dale he had been told to wait until summoned and that had been over four hours past. Chuckling Leef found a suitable branch and set down on one of the gardens stone benches and began to shape the branch into a bird. Leef wondered how long it wold take for the elves to welcome him, it wasn't as though he was a stranger, but it seemed that after 3 years of continued good relations between the elves and dwarves that they still did not trust him. Leef shrugged to himself, that was just the way of things he supposed.
Cal'Rissa came around the corner and smiled as she saw the elf. Walking up, she set her hand on her sword to keep it still and bowed slightly. "Master Hammerforge, the Princess welcomes you to Aren'Dale and would like to know if it is convenient to see you now? She apologizes for the wait." She rose and smiled as emerald green eyes flashed friendly towards him. She was a soft golden tan with matching her auburn hair. And her lithe body was clothed in the garb of a uniform, but still elegant and regal to her form.
Leef smiled as he was greeted. "Bah don't have to bow to me, I am no one special Lady Cal'Rissa, I remember your beautiful smile from my last visit. Leef finished his carving and handed to her as he rose. "A beautiful bird for a beautiful lady, now lets go see your princess an see what I may do for your kind people."
Rissa smiled and took the bird. "You were kind to me then, and still are now, Master Hammerforge." She turned and led them to the throne room where the princess was having a light snack in a small sitting room to the side. Aisland stood and smiled holding her hand towards Lee. "Master Hammerforge. It is so good to see you again. Please join me and tell me what brings you back to Aren'Dale." She motioned to the seat beside her as she finished.
Leef remained standing but moved over to the princess bowing in her presence as was proper. "Actually I was hoping ye would tell meh that yer highness, I was ordered to appear before you by my superiors." Leef watched the princess carefully and a fleeing of dread began to creep upon him.
Aisland sat down and glanced to Rissa. The silence was filled with one word fallen with command from Rissa's lips. "LEAVE!" She never moved, never turned her head or looked at anyone but the Princess, but the guests, handmaidens, guards and all rose in silence and soon the balconied room was empty. Rissa then moved away to stand at the door as Aisland settled herself in the chair and looked up at him. "Sit please, Lee. They sent you because you need to help me. I have a spy. Someone has tried twice to take my life in the last moon cycle and my own guard cannot ferret the person out." Her gaze never went to Rissa, but if Lee looked, the embarrassment and fury on Rissa's face at failing her queen was evident. "I will ask you to stay on, as someone here to help. It is a mean thing, but many will not notice you and their tongues will wag more freely. Please, Lee... there is no one else I can trust to the free rein of my castle in such circumstances.
Leef listened carefully taking in what he was being told. "Yer highness I will gladly stay and defend ye but ye will have to have Rissa there stay with me, I need someone who knows the ins and outs and trust me when I say this, ye have none better suited to that task then Rissa. And believe me Highness, the spy shall fall upon the brunt of meh ax if they try to take yer life in my presence." Leef bowed and then sat down waiting for the princess's command.
Aisland seemed to exhale a breath she had been holding unconsciously. "Thank you, Lee. And yes, I think Rissa would be the perfect 'escort' for you lending credence to perhaps I don't trust those around me. It may make the real trouble maker relax a bit and slip up." She nodded to Rissa who came towards them. "Rissa will fix you up in a room on the same hall as mine. I cannot validate you being too close, but you will be one of the first to hear if something occurs." She nodded and lifted her goblet of wine smiling. "Thank you again, Hammerforge. It eases my mind that you are here." She waited to see if there was anything else he wanted.
"i am happy to be of service Lady Aisland." Leef rose and bowed then turned to Rissa. "Looks like we get te spend some quality time together after all Rissa my friend, not that hunting down a spy was quite what I had in mind but ah well. " Leef winked at Rissa and moved to leave the Princess
Rissa blushed slightly as the Princess winked and nodded in dismissal. Once in the hall, Rissa regained her composure and turned down the hall and up to the next floor thru the miriad of lazy wandering halls and steps. "I am glad you are back, Lee. You were missed. The dagger you gave me last time you were here is still my favorite." She patted the thigh sheath where is was nestled. "Still not sure how you got it perfectly balanced for my fighting style. But thank you again." Without thinking, her hand patted his shoulder lightly. As they came to a door three down from the Princess' room, she opened it and motioned him first. "Your rooms..."
Leef smiled and patted her hand softly. "Now if I tell ye how I made it then were would be the mystery hmm? besides it does my heart good to see you wear the blade." Leef listened and looked into his room. "It is good to be back Rissa, I just wish it were under better terms." Leef walked into his room and set down taking out another piece of his wood. "So er... yer welcome to come in fer a bit and talk and we discuss exactly how we are going to capture this spy."
She came in, shutting his door as she did, and crossed her ankles before sitting on the floor facing him. She loved watching him whittle. It was soothing somehow. "All I can think of is to wait till they move again. I haven't been able to get any hint of who the person is. I can't even find out if they are elven or not." She sighed and hung her head, her fingers absently playing with the tie on the dagger sheath around her calf. She dropped her voice as she seemed to confess. "Twice, Lee... TWICE!" She thumped her fist on the floor. She looked up as a tear fell. Mad at her sign of weakness she rose and went to the balcony door looking out. Her fists clenching and unclenching as she spoke. "They came into Aisland's room. Once they even touched her. And I couldn't catch them. They could have killed her, Lee. And I came in in time to stop it, but they got away. What will happen next time?" She didn't turn. She wasn't upset, she was furious. This person had come close to harming the one person who had never held anything against her for not coming close to the 6 ft height of their race. Even made her Captain of the Guard and First Sword in her personal envoy. And she had failed... twice. She was very angry, but more at her own ineptness.
Leef followed her out into the balcony and slipped his whittle into her free hand while wiping at the tear with his other hand. "Yer thinking of it all wrong Rissa, twice the spy may have gotten to the princess but is she not alive? did you not drive the intruder off, and more importantly I dinate hear anyone else getting there in time for that matter." Leef held her hand for a moment before letting go. Looking at the whittle he had given her he smiled and rose her chin to face him. "This here whittle is in the shape of a heart. It represents meh own heart, for when I am with ye my heart it complete. Do ye not think the princess values your worth? If she didn't, ye would be stripped of yer rank, she is just being cautious is all."
Leef add hurriedly changing the subject back to her own anger of failing. "Ye haven't failed at anything, and what did I tell ye about blaming yerself? stop wasting time on what you might and I do stress might, have been able to do better and focus on getting this bustard."
She couldn't help but giggle as he cursed. It wasn't like her to do such things. But somehow, it seemed right from him. Commanding. She squeezed the carved heart and smiled down at him. "My heart too, Lee. It always seems to have been that way..." She slid it into her belt near her coin purse was. She looked to Lee and nodded as he spoke of the Princess being alive. "She is, but what of next time? In the last three nights since the last attack, I have stood vigil over her as she slept. No one has dared to try and enter again. But I cannot keep such vigil up indefinitely." She didn't dare let him know that she hadn't slept for more than a candle mark in the last five turns of night. He used to worry when she was up two turns just to help with the watch standing. "I have other duties I need to see to as well." She smiled. She was glad the Princess had taken her advice and sent for the dwarf.
Leef smiled at her words and turned to face her fully. "Well now ye don't worry about that, at night ill stand guard, I meself don't have any other duties to attend to so il better be able to maintain my guard over, besides the spy will see you elsewhere and think the princess is a safe target once more, which will give the chance to grab him. And I'm sure you know this, but if this spy is from another kingdom bent on invading this land the dwarves of Ferlings Tooth will rally arms and be at yer peoples side no matter how many dare to march across you, ye have meh word on that Rissa."
She didn't realize till his voice spoke her name as his final word that he still touched her. She nodded and sighed. She needed to sleep but was one room over with a door between. She would only be a shout away. "All right. I know better than to argue with you anyway." She smiled but the yawn started and she turned covering it with a cough. "I ummm should probably let you nap a bit before you stand watch if you want. I know the sun sets shortly, but Aisland stays up quite late and I can stay with her till you get up if you want." She stifled the yawn and turned back to him as if nothing had happened. She wondered if she would be able to sleep...
