Ashar Kleor 02-15-2015, 12:52 PM
She already had had a training session with other squadron members in the morning, but this day was filled with drills it seemed. She didn't mind, on the contrary. She had nothing against the simulators but flying the actual crafts was always so much better, and not just for the thrills it could provide.
Dressed in her black pilot gear, the Chiss made her way to the hangar where her TIE Defender was awaiting her. She was to work with a recent recruit who wasn't part of the Sabers in the main roster, due to lack of combat experience for what she had gathered. Yet, the new Cadet was to train with the Sabers.
Putting her gloves on, she talked with the mechanics, checking that everything was ready for the session.
**
Kao Demascus 02-19-2015, 04:29 PM
Sandy brown hair tucked up to accommodate a helmet, her suit neat and clean and her gloves tucked in her leg pocket with flight pad tucked in the other, the woman made her way across the hanger. Asking a tech for her target, she smiled and stepped towards the Chiss woman and nodded. "Ensign Kleor, Cadet Demascus. I hope I'm not late." She looked around at the myriad of ships in the hanger in various stages of repair. If she hadn't been able to make the cut as a pilot, mechanic would have been her next choice. Anything to stay near the inanimate objects that brought her pleasure.
Realizing she was wandering in her thoughts, she grabbed her gloves. "So what will you have of me today, Ma'am?" She was eager to get in the air. These last two weeks without being off the ground had left an almost physical ache in her body.
Eyes shining probably more than they should be at this stage, she fairly bounced with anticipation. She may not know the names or workings of every system, but once in the pilot seat, most ships sang for her. She just wanted to prove it.
**
Ashar 02-20-2015, 01:42 PM
When she had enlisted in the Imperial Navy, she had restarted from the bottom, even with years of service in the Chiss Fleets. Back then she had also been a flight instructor, so she had volunteered to help with training sessions if people needed it.
Crimson eyes went to the human who approached, appreciating the good timing and the manners. You are on time, Cadet Demascus. I read that you lack combat experience but that you have a back seat with the Sabers. Today we are going to do some flying sessions above the city.
It was a challenging experience and she recalled how Tiberius had taken several pilots, including herself, for one of these a few months ago. Have you ever flown a TIE Defender?
**
Kao 02-21-2015, 05:22 PM
Kao nodded to the Ensign. “Yes, Ma’am,” she replied to the inquiry about a combat seat.
When asked about the TIE, she answered honestly knowing to lie would put them both in jeopardy. “No, Ma’am. Nothing this big before. If my studies are correct though, the cockpit and maneuvering set up aren’t much different from the security fighters back home. Just different body configuration and much larger span.”
She glanced down the hanger then out beyond it to the flight line. “My brothers saw to it I had the chance to fly anything with a stick and an engine, Ma’am.” She then looked back at the woman. "But I can tell you that the security fighters for inside the city limits are the biggest I’ve actually flown. Small ships are tight on maneuvering and easy to shift around in. But I know my reflexes will have to make adjustments for the larger fighters we will fly in.” She then nodded and lifted her chin in confidence. “I promise you I won’t do anything daring or rash. I have no desire to show off, only to learn.”
This woman’s evaluation would make or break her career. Either she would get her combat seat and learn from the best fighters in the fleet, or she would be turning spanos with the grease monkeys in the hanger.
**
Ashar 02-22-2015, 10:22 AM
Your log indicated that you had some simulation hours on such craft. Nothing as flying the real thing, but it gives you some basic idea of how it goes. Being here to learn is the right mindset, Cadet. Let's get in your ship.
Without further ado, she put her helmet on and climbed up into the TIE Defender's cockpit. She went through pre-flight, finding everything ready. The decision to give a regular seat to Demascus in the Sabers wasn't her call, as it belonged to Tiberius, their squadron's leader, but she could help with some training in the meantime.
Saber 4, prepped for launch. She announced to controls. She waited for both Demascus to confirm her status as well, and lifted off as soon as the hangar controls gave them the go ahead. The engines roared as she left the ground, speeding off into the skies.

Kao 02-22-2015, 05:00 PM
Kao hopped up into the cockpit and donned her helmet. Doing her checklist, by the book because there were a few more controls to learn, she was swiftly done and asking for clearance. "Saber 13, prepped for take off." Some were superstitious, but to her 13 was an odd AND a prime number. That made it lucky for her all her life.
Given clearance by Control, she throttled up and lifted clean and neatly from the plascrete. A moment later she was on the Ensign's six. "Saber 13, ready Ma'am." She called to the channel between them. The fighter wasn't as bulky as she thought and she took a second to test controls for pitch, yaw and roll to see about their sensitivity. Knowing how much pressure it took to get a response from your baby was as important and how much pressure to get her to perform.
If Ashar had been paying attention, her wavers as she did her check would have been slight.
**
Ashar 02-24-2015, 04:52 PM
As both TIE defenders took off, she felt the pressure of the process. It wasn't the worst possible scenario and it was normal for her to experience it. The flight in the atmosphere and then to some of the canyons outside of the city where Tiberius had taken them a while ago, would prove to be interesting to judge this new cadet.
Follow my lead. She simply said on the channel. As Chiss, chatter and small talk weren't her forte so she was rather clear cut in what she said. After they left the base, she took a sharp left turn bringing them closer to downtown Ravelin where the immense buildings would prove trying to zig zag in between.
**
Kao 02-24-2015, 05:00 PM
"Yes, Ma'am." Was Kao's quick reply on the link. She never understood those who wanted to talk while flying. She was glad her instructor wasn't one of them. Coms should be limited to directions, corrections and in this case, training. Discussing day's events, teasing, and such were for the ground.
As they headed for the city, she smiled. Moving slightly back and forth to check response times on a slightly broader range, she then quickly fell in on the Ensigns six and followed. It was like maneuvering in the trees and canyons at home. At least she hoped it would be that easy. "Relax, Ka... you have nothing to worry about," she half whispered to herself as she took a deep breath.
She was flying. And this was something she was good at. Combat training later would definitely take more out of her, her weakness she admitted, but flying was like breathing to her. And she took a deep breath and settled in to show she was worthy. Once satisfied she knew the give in the controls, she followed her leader and smiled.
**
Ashar 02-24-2015, 05:08 PM
She had got used to the squad leader's more laid back manners and leadership and she respected the man. Yet, if she had the lead, even on a small training session as such, she fell back into her formal Chiss ways.
She kept close watch on the other woman's actions and she could tell that she was indeed a good pilot. It would help when she began combat training for the squadron. Watch out when you take right turns. You lose some balance. She observed at some point.
Letting Demascus adjust, she then took them away from Ravelin downtown, but via the commercial district. Without a warning, she dipped down beneath a large passerelle that linked two skyscrappers. It was a short call but for what she had seen, the Cadet should handle it. Reply With Quote
**
Kao 02-24-2015, 05:18 PM
"Got it." She answered thankful for the help. She growled silently to herself and extended her senses a bit more to compensate for the larger craft.
As the Chiss dove, she followed right on her tail. She had seen the link and had been anticipating either a dive or rise to circumvent it. She smiled as the guessed the leader's choice correctly in her head. *Going over would have been easy,* she thought. But she wasn't smug, even in her own mind. She didn't know the Ensign well enough to anticipate her. She shouldn't have done it to begin with. The woman could have chosen to stay safe in the city limits and test her in the uninhabited places.
She furrowed her brow. Making one quick judgement the right way wasn't going to earn her a seat. She suddenly heard her brother's training in her head. "Watch your lead, Little Bird. They will flick before a move. Sometimes it's a tail twitch in an animal before it turns, sometimes it's a throttle twitch before a dive or climb. Watch for the flick, but don't become tunnel visioned by it." He had taught her flying tells the way her other brother knew gambling tells.
Not losing her focus on her environment, she started to what the lead TIE to see if she could sense a tell before a move. Even a slight tilt microns before a change in direction would help her... now and in combat later.
**
Ashar 02-24-2015, 05:23 PM
The Cadet heeded her correction. She knew how to listen and react in accurate time. It was a solid skill to have. While she was a pilot at heart, she had missed helping with flight instruction so being able to do it right now was a treat. And being able to do it in real, not in the sims was even better.
As they reached the limit of the city, flying over more natural landscapes, they began to see the canyons in the distance. Then, without a warning, she suddenly flipped high and backward, positioning herself behind Demascus.
Take us to the canyon then wait for my instruction.

A small gasp was bit back and didn't make it through the comlink, but the maneuver was impressive. She had done similar in the past, but the security flits wouldn't roll so the roll over impressed her.
As the instructor gave her directions to lead to the canyon, she smiled. "Permission to familiarize myself with controls, Saber 4." She queried as she throttled out and put on a small burst of speed. She wouldn't have cause to do the complete inverted flip the Ensign had, but dives, rolls and sharp turns to prepare for the confines of the canyons would definitely be beneficial.
**
Ashar 02-24-2015, 07:58 PM
Permission granted, Saber 13. She was curious to see what the Cadet would do and how she would fly and experiment as they headed towards the canyons. The open skies would give opportunities for the human to express some of her potential and the Ensign was going to watch her closely.
**
Kao 02-24-2015, 08:24 PM
"Roger." She acknowledged and smiled. "Let's see what you can do, Little Bird." She said to herself, Ashar may or may not hear her, but muffled under her breath, she hadn't honestly thought about it as her brother's word taunted her.
She pushed the throttle forward and picked up speed. Pulling back she pointed the nose skyward and felt it climb. A smile bigger than all of the galactic planets combined covered her face as she relaxed and her world focused to her, the Tie and the terrain.
She was still aware of a wingman she couldn't abandon and made sure that if the Ensign was merely watching, she didn't stray from visual. If she was following, she didn't do anything so swiftly or wild that the instructor would be at risk or hard pressed to follow. As she rolled over to head back towards the ground, she pulled up easily once more to hug the terrain. She rose up and rolled over once in a simple spiral. Then once leveled, reversed it.
Simple moves that pushed and pulled the TIE in any direction the instructor would ask were tried. The majority of the moves were smooth and easy. Recovery from the rolls took half a second longer than she liked, but then, it gave her something she would need to practice.
She kept on doing simple things as she got the feel and the canyon got closer.
**
Ashar 02-24-2015, 08:31 PM
She kept flying at a safe distance from the Cadet, so she would have a better view and gave enough space so she could practice as much as she wanted.
She didn't say much until they were reaching the nearness of the canyons. Beware when you climb up. You are a bit too quick and then you lose a few seconds to stabilize at your new angle. The same goes for the time you take after a roll. Rest of your moves are precise and steady though.
Once they were above the canyons, she remained in stationary flight for a moment. I'll take the lead again. Be careful. She could have gone in first, but after what she had seen, she wanted to test the Cadet further. The canyons didn't get any more friendly but it was a test.
**
Kao 02-24-2015, 08:38 PM
"Understood, Ma'am." She nodded and made note that her feeling had been right. She had been taking too much time to regain control. She needed to set her mind a half a second ahead of her move to make the adjustments.
As the Ensign spoke of taking the lead and being careful, she nodded, "Roger, that. Ready to go, Saber 4."
She smiled and once more settled herself on Ashar's six ready to learn a bit more of the beauty she was sitting in. Edit/Delete Message

Ashar 02-24-2015, 08:56 PM
As soon as Demascus was ready, she dove towards the canyon. Her speed was steady but she slowed down a tiny bit, entering the canyon smoothly without losing her momentum. The first part was the easy one, with a few turns.
After five minutes, it narrowed down and both fighters had to avoid some debris obstructing part of the semi collapsed area. It was tricky and a favorite playground in the area for the Sabers.
They all had problems with it at first, but it was part of the learning process. The whole point was to see how they learned to improve and how they managed to make it through in one piece.
**
Kao 02-24-2015, 09:02 PM
She followed Ashar in with no problem. She over compensated for the sudden debris and nearly clipped a canyon wall. As a small string of vulgarity fell from her lips, it was followed by a quick, "Sorry, I'm ok." As she moved on.
Something told her that debris field hadn't seen the last of her. Even if she had to come with just a wing-man to keep watch, she would learn the quick double corrections that came back to back in the cluttered area.
The bird was bigger than she was used to and the closeness of the canyon walls reminded her of it as one sharp turn actually claimed a touch of paint. It didn't set her off but did set her mind to a soft growl as she quickly corrected. If a near miss and a bit of wing paint were her only calamities this day, she would consider herself lucky.
**
Ashar 02-24-2015, 09:08 PM
She heard the string of curses, finding it so different to hear human express themselves so much more freely than Chiss. When the Cadet added that she was okay, her retort was concise. You are still flying. She pressed on and sped up just a bit as they continued into the canyons.
She knew that Demascus had had a few close calls, but this wasn't over yet. As they reached a large crack in the canyon, she didn't fly to the other side. Instead she dove into the rift. There wasn't much room to maneuver to get back upward to the skies, but it was the whole point.
Within the minute, she took the upward turn and broke free from the rift, but even for her, it was no easy feat, and she had already done this a dozen times.

She nodded to herself as she was reminded that the self reprimand hadn't been necessary. It also reminded her that it wasn't just her brother or his friends on the other side. "Yes, Ma'am." She affirmed at the comment.
Getting into the rift was easy. She had been in tight spaces before. But, then again, she could see the small opening before it came.
She didn't see the end as swiftly as she wanted and the bird responded to her sudden pull up a half second later than she liked. Her belly scraped the canyon wall as she pulled up and though her growl was inaudible and her curses in her mind, she still wasn't happy with herself. Yes, she was still flying, but to know she had probably caused a great deal of damage to the TIE rankled her more than her lack of ability.
**
Ashar 02-24-2015, 09:15 PM
She hadn't pivoted her ship to see how the cadet did. But she still saw from the corner of her eye that there had been scrapping. How bad, she didn't know. There was no reason to keep flying and damaging a ship further if it had been too much.
Status report. She inquired sharply, wanting to know where to take the lesson next.
**
Kao 02-24-2015, 09:23 PM
Already a step ahead of her instructor, she was running a full diagnostic to be sure she was still mission capable. "All five by five, Ma'am." She answered probably quicker than the woman had been expecting. To cover that she wasn't just saying that she reported the diagnostic. "Diagnostic says full mission capable. I imagine Chief Mech won't be happy with paint job, but no instrument or weapon damage done. Saber 13 still full mission capable, Saber 4."
She knew the damage would be cosmetic only, it seemed, but that didn't mean it angered any less than if she had removed a wing. It seemed irrational, but the birds were more to her than steel and plas joints. It was freedom, in more ways than one.
**
Ashar 02-24-2015, 09:38 PM
Cosmetic damage was annoying and angering, at least to her, but if they could still fly, the session wasn't over. They weren't far from the end of it, but still had ground to cover. Copy that Saber 13. Follow me. She instructed again, as she took them back in through a canyon, but not the one they had arrived from. Demascus was doing well so far, so trying out the other - more difficult - canyon would prove another step.
Once this was done, they would embark on the last leg of the session, but the Cadet didn't need to know this yet.
**
Kao 02-24-2015, 09:42 PM
"Roger," she responded. She opened the gap a touch between them. It seemed to make sense to her. It gave them both a bit more to to maneuver and it allowed her to find the twitch-tell that would hopefully keep her from kissing canyon walls again.
As they went on, she managed to go where the Ensign went with no further damage. Her clearance needed more work, sometimes coming a bit closer to the walls or floor than her predecessor, but she didn't leave more dirt on her fighter. Edit/Delete Message

Ashar 02-24-2015, 09:48 PM
She noticed how the Cadet was able to keep her mind on the assignment, even with hiccups in the course of action and corrections offered. The time through the canyon went better, even if at a slightly slower pace for Demascus, she remarked.
As they emerged from the canyon, she issued her last order. Lead the way back to base. It also was a challenge as they had taken a lot of side roads and turns, but orientation was important. Reply With Quote
**
Kao 02-24-2015, 09:52 PM
"Roger, Saber 4. Heading back to base." She responded and rose a bit higher as she reoriented herself. She knew she couldn't do the narrows or the debris field in reverse. At least not yet.
"Permission to reenter canyon on return trip, Ma'am." Came her com as she headed back towards their origin point. Edit/Delete Message
**
Ashar 02-24-2015, 09:55 PM
She was surprised, well surprised, when the cadet asked for permission to re enter the canyon on their way back. It was something she would have done herself, but she knew that not everyone went for such things.
Permission granted, Saber 13. Lead on.
**
Kao 02-24-2015, 10:02 PM
"Copy." And she dove back into the tight confines once more. Her flight was a bit smoother this time because she wasn't anticipating Ashar's moves and had clear line of sight on what was coming up. She moved a bit lower to the canyon floor and flew back along the tight spaces with much more confidence. As she rose out of the canyon to skip the narrows, and once more to skip the debris field, she rolled over once each time just before going back in.
It was a risk, disorientation and misjudging walls for floor had claimed many pilots she knew. But canyon chasing was always safer than city limit play and so while the colors, turns and layout were different, she felt at home here. Edit/Delete Message
**
Ashar 02-24-2015, 10:06 PM
She followed the Cadet into the canyon, knowing that having a clear view might help Demascus flying in. She was impressed with how she flew with ease in there. It would serve her well. The better she piloted prior to combat training, the better it would be when she started it.
Don't fly too close to the canyon floor. Your run was smoother but this needs to be corrected. Even if she was chased from above by an enemy, being too close to ground was a wasted risk on several levels. Reply With Quote

Kao 02-24-2015, 10:26 PM
Kao, hearing the chastisement, acknowledged it. "Roger." Rising to over half the depth of the canyon, her mind began to wonder at the pros and cons of being low.
Combat...
That was the factor she had to consider now. In combat, being close to the floor afforded you protection, but also hindered you. Enemies could come down and force you to remain low so you had mo maneuverability. At which point you would force yourself into the floor or wall when the options ran out.
As she bit her lip realizing her thought process had to change, she swung out of the canyon fairly close to where they had entered it. On the horizon was the city. "Saber 13, to Saber 4. Same route back or circumvent the city?" Same route would mean between the buildings, which was fine with her. She just needed to know before they got to close to make the wide swing around worth it if the Chiss chose to go around. Edit/Delete Message

Ashar 02-24-2015, 10:33 PM
Combat had always been on her radar since military academy, even though she hadn't always seen fighting during her service in both Chiss fleets, prior to moving to imperial space. She knew that taking new parameters into account was a hard task, but if this Cadet had been accepted, she had the potential to do this.
When asked about the road to take, she recalled the weather forecast, announcing strong winds, which were barely starting. They would arrive right on them if they circumvented the city.
Circumvent the city by East Side.
**
Kao 02-24-2015, 10:40 PM
Kao nodded and popped another 'roger' through the com before rolling her TIE towards the direction given.
She made her turns a bit more sharper or wider than necessary, thinking of ways she would have to maneuver in space. "Permission to familiarize myself with controls more, Ma'am." She had an idea, but without warning her wing man, she knew it would look like she had lost her mind.
**
Ashar 02-24-2015, 11:01 PM
The wind was starting to blow a lot, but she didn't mind that the Cadet wished to experiment more. As long as she didn't end smashing against anything, she could do this.
Permission granted.
**
Kao 02-24-2015, 11:33 PM
"Copy," was the reply.
Kao quickly tapped on several rock formations in close succession on the ground before her. Using them like pillar bases, she imagined those rocks forming straight up columns. Even with wind starting to buffet her TIE, she relaxed, and quickly went thru several twists and turns as she navigated through the 'field' of pillars she had painted for herself.
To anyone watching, from anywhere but straight down from above. She would simply look like she was testing the controls or doing something strange. But looking straight down, it would have been easy to see her navigation points. As the wind picked up to a pace she didn't want to take chances in, she fell back into formation in front of Ashar. "Base in T minus three minutes, Ma'am. Landing where we departed from at the hangers?"
The advantage to practicing the way she had, nothing to hit. The downside to it was she knew it wasn't real and she knew once or twice would be ok, but her mind wouldn't keep sharp for long when it wasn't able to think of real danger as part of the dance.
**
Ashar 02-25-2015, 11:00 AM
She gained altitude to get a better look at what the Cadet was doing. She realized what was going on. While it worked well as such, this would be another story in the real environment. You will have to do this again, repeatedly, between actual pillars or buildings. She observed before falling silent again until the Cadet gave status report.
Same hangar indeed. She confirmed, following Demascus to their destination. **
Kao 02-25-2015, 12:39 PM
She was glad at the words she heard on her comm. First, it meant she hadn't failed so miserably this morning that the Ensign was going to make sure she never saw a cockpit again. Second, her craziness hadn't been brought to question. Sure, she was a bit of a nut on the ground. But in the air, she wanted them to know she was all business.
Given the order to return to point of origin, she nosed that direction and moved across the base.
After given clearance by control to land, she spotted her TIE nearly exactly where she had been on take off, given a micron or two.

After landing her TIE right where she had picked it up, she went through the last check up. All was perfect. Then she exited the Defender and climbed down to the hangar ground. Removing her helmet, she walked up to the woman she had just flown with.
Good job, Cadet. I leave for Balmorra three days. You will come with me for further training. The journey would include trying out new generation simulators at one of the bases there, as well as more flying exercises in the wild.

She had finished her shut down and post flight and was stepping from her fighter as the Ensign approached her. "Thank you ma'am. I will be ready." She was glad she hadn't been written off. Tonight she would go over the canyon training again and again and see where she went wrong and what she needed to improve on.
She ran her hand almost lovingly over the great steel beast beside her as she grinned. "She is a beauty, Ma'am. I am gonna make sure she's buttoned up before I head in. Thank you again, and I will be ready to go when you say." She saluted and smiled. It may have not been necessary under the circumstances, but she knew it would mean more to the woman than a mere thanks.
